At the centre of the Mayan Riveria is Playa del Carmen, a playground for hip Europeans and toned-and-tanned Americans. This resort town showcases the renowned white-sand beaches of the Caribbean Coast along the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.
Playa del Carmen's powdery white sands are nestled between Cancun to its north, Tulum in the south and the island of Cozumel, 20 km east with its fantastic diving in the nearby Great Maya Reef. Awake from an afternoon nap to take a dip, go snorkelling or deep-sea fishing in the beautiful blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Playa is an easy choice as a holiday destination with its range of hotels, many first-class restaurants and beachside nightclubs. Quinta Avienda, also known as 5th Avenue, is the main tourist hub and shopping district. For a more authentic Mexico experience, venture outside of the centre to a local cenote (sinkhole) or Mayan ruins in Tulum.
Cruise ships dock in nearby Cozumel and traffic people to the mainland arriving at the Playa del Carmen Maritime Terminal. If the glimmering Caribbean waters are full, then Booking.com has a huge number of hotels with an outdoor swimming pool by the beach.

The beach wasn't swimmable because it had a lot of rocks, a lot of seaweed and the hotel didn't clean it. Go to Cancún, Playa del Carmen is not beautiful. The resort: Yucatan princess was the worst part, as the food served there was horrible. I came home very sad.

Playa Del Carmen is a great place: fancy Fifth Ave with amazing restaurants and beautiful and expensive shoppings but also local and national with small retailers. There is even WalMart!! It’s home of CocoBongo and it’s safe for you to walk all over! I like to stay at Playacar and it is a short bike ride from Playa Del Carmen our a taxi ride.

Having spent some time in Cancun, (zona hotelera) before visiting playa del Carmen, I think I would definitely prefer the beaches in Cancun. Playa del Carmen had a lot of seaweed and I found that unpleasant. The sea was alright, the facilities we didn't use because our accommodation was right in front of the beach.

The staff were very attentive & friendly & also helped us organise a taxi to the airport within minutes when our prepaid Booking.com arranged transfer didn’t turn up!
