This region, the\u00a0Yucatan Peninsula<\/strong><\/a>, is packed with\u00a0both history and mind-blowing\u00a0natural beauty.<\/p>\n

With almost no rivers<\/strong> running over the earth’s surface, water can be mostly found in underground rivers and cenotes (sinkholes).<\/p>\n

On the surface, you’ll find jungles, wetlands, lagoons, and mangrove forests.<\/p>\n

Mixed in are\u00a0Mayan ruins, colonial towns, small villages, and hot tourist spots like Cancun or Playa del Carmen.<\/p>\n

As you can imagine, all of the above provides a lot of great material for day tripping.<\/p>\n

So here are some of my favorite tips in no particular order.\u00a0Why’s that? Because they’re all good.<\/p>\n

#1 Holbox Island<\/h3>\n

Okay. I\u00a0lied.<\/p>\n

This place is first on the list. Hands down and eyes closed.<\/p>\n

\"Holbox<\/a>A small island in the Gulf of Mexico separated from the mainland by a lagoon, Holbox is a true tropical beauty to behold.<\/p>\n

Why I love it?<\/p>\n

Almost no cars, white sand streets, cool vibe, and stunning beauty. Did I mention the sunsets? The most spectacular you may ever see!<\/p>\n

What to do?<\/h4>\n

  1. Rent a golf cart<\/strong><\/a> or a bicycle and explore the inhabited part of the island from point to point<\/li>\n
  2. Take a Classic Tour<\/strong><\/a> in the morning to visit the Yalahau Spring<\/strong><\/a>, Passion Island, and Bird Island.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Where to Eat?<\/h4>\n

    Have some fresh ceviche at Raices<\/strong><\/a> on the beach or lunch at La Isla del Colibri<\/strong><\/a> right on the corner of the main plaza. For dinner, be sure to check out El Chapulim<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

    How to Get There<\/h4>\n

    Drive, hire private transportation or go by bus to the town of Chiquila<\/a><\/strong>, which is approximately two hours from Playa del Carmen. From there you’ll take a ferry over to Holbox Island<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
