How to Choose a Good Tequila in 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>July 24th is National Tequila Day<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<h2>Tequila or Te-Kill-Ya?<\/h2>\n<p>I think we\u2019ve all had an experience or two with our good friend Tequila.<\/p>\n<p>Some experiences which most of us would rather not relive.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d often thought that my nail polish remover would be much tastier and easier to knockback.<\/p>\n<p>Preparing for the unpleasantness, it only makes sense to take a good lick of biting salt, rinse down with a methyl-tasting spirit, and quickly pucker your lips around a lime all in time to take your mind off the fact that your eyes are watering and your body is quivering.<\/p>\n<p>Always seems like a good idea at the time!<\/p>\n<p>In truth, <strong>Tequila is not intended to be consumed as a shot<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That less than desirable methyl tasting spirit is probably the reason you and tequila defriended.<\/p>\n<p>Well played Tequila, well played!<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/1280-167223941-tequila-gold-and-silver-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Tequila gold and silver with orange and lemon\" width=\"760\" height=\"507\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Guess what gringos?<\/p>\n<p>Tequila is traditionally sipped with oranges, dried ground chiles, and salt during conversations after dinner, \u201cSobre Mesa\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Designed to keep you engaged and awake after all those tacos.<\/p>\n<h2>There is a difference and it won\u2019t Te-Kill-Ya!<\/h2>\n<p>There is a difference between the good stuff and the cheap stuff.<\/p>\n<p>90% of Tequilas are made in the State of Jalisco, Mexico from the Blue Agave plant which ain&#8217;t no Cactus!<\/p>\n<p>Tequila can only be Tequila if it&#8217;s made from the Blue Agave.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/agave-plant.jpg\"><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5544\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/agave-plant.jpg\" alt=\"agave plant in rows\" width=\"760\" height=\"456\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Tequila is broken down into 2 categories:<\/h3>\n<p>1) 100% Agave<br \/>\n2) Tequila Mixto (mixed)<\/p>\n<p>100% Agave is good stuff.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not mixed with anything so you&#8217;re getting a pure tequila.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not too pricey so if you&#8217;re looking to avoid a hangover make sure you&#8217;re drinking 100% Agave tequila.<\/p>\n<p>Tequila Mixto is cheaper, half mixed with Agave and the other half being sugars (cane sugars usually).<\/p>\n<p>Take this sweet devious recipe, combined with additives and colorings and I think you\u2019re beginning to understand why you and Tequila are no longer friends. Mixto tequila will most likely give you a hangover.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond these 2 categories, Tequila is further broken down into 5\u00a0types.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/types-of-tequila.jpg\"><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5543\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/types-of-tequila.jpg\" alt=\"3 types of tequila\" width=\"760\" height=\"464\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>5 Types of Tequila<\/h2>\n<h3>1) Tequila Silver &#8211; Blanco &#8211; Plata &#8211; White &#8211; Platinum<\/h3>\n<p>This young\u2019 un, aged no more than 60 days is either 100% Agave or a Mixto.<\/p>\n<p>Tequila at its purest form obtains intense raw flavors from the Agave Plant.<\/p>\n<p>For a good and cheap mix for a frosty margarita, this one&#8217;s a favorite.<\/p>\n<h3>2) Tequila Gold &#8211; Joven &#8211; Oro<\/h3>\n<p>Not often aged, Gold Tequilas are almost always a Mixto and contain additives and colorings.<\/p>\n<p>Gold Tequilas are largely responsible for that bad tequila experience most of us have had in the past. So now we know it wasn\u2019t us, we can blame Goldie.<\/p>\n<h3>3) Tequila Reposado<\/h3>\n<p>Aged from 2-9 months and resposoda (rested) in bourbon barrels or oak barrels.<\/p>\n<p>Aging the tequila takes some of the Agave\u2019s raw bite and intense flavor down a notch or two.<\/p>\n<h3>4) Tequila A\u00f1ejo (extra aged)<\/h3>\n<p>After it\u2019s one-year birthday, this complex and smooth amber liquid is really what Tequila is all about.<\/p>\n<h3>5) Tequila Extra A\u00f1ejo (ultra aged)<\/h3>\n<p>Aged longer than its siblings, Extra Anejo becomes darker, richer and smoother.<\/p>\n<p>Also the most costly!<\/p>\n<h2>So what\u2019s not going to Ti-kill your wallet?<\/h2>\n<p>Tequila can be purchased from as low as $10.00 all the way to 3.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, you read that right, 3.5 million dollars, not pesos!<\/p>\n<p>This handmade, platinum diamond-encrusted bottle produced from world-renowned Ley 925 holds the Guinness World Record for the most expensive bottle in the world!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s beautiful, but it\u2019s all about the bottle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/most-expensive-tequila.jpg\"><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5545\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/most-expensive-tequila.jpg\" alt=\"Ley 925, most expensive tequila\" width=\"760\" height=\"807\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are some great options to choose from.
