Why Is There Now a Visitor Tax in Quintana Roo for Tourists?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one likes to see signs like this&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24362\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Everything-You-Need-to-Know-About-the-New-Visitor-Tax-pay-tax.jpg\" alt=\"tax\" width=\"760\" height=\"513\" data-id=\"24362\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, unfortunately, taxes are a <\/span><b>part of life<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, traveling to <\/span><b>Quintana Roo state in Mexico<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means you get to pay another one.\u00a0 Yay! *eye roll*<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing what to expect takes away some of the sting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s start with the <\/span><b>different names used for this tax<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Visitax<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Visitor tax<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tourism tax<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tourist tax\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll see all of these names used online and they mean the same thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You get to part with a few extra dollars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Secretary of Finance and Planning of the State Government<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> launched the tax through the <\/span><b>Quintana Roo Tax Administration System<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SATQ).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tax is <\/span><b>mandatory<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for people leaving the state of Quintana Roo from <\/span><b>April 1, 2021.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is some good news\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It doesn\u2019t apply to younger visitors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aim of the tax is to <\/span><b>generate revenue of around <\/b><b>$29.1 million<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cash will be used to <\/span><b>create jobs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>develop new tourist attractions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, there does seem to be positive news if you\u2019re a regular visitor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even more, things to see and do has to be good, right?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After the pandemic, the area, its citizens, and the tourist industry has been greatly affected.<\/p>\n<p>Take comfort in knowing that your money is helping the situation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong><a href=\"#top\">Back to top<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>8. Does the Tax Make it Harder to Travel to Cancun?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m going to quote<\/span> <b>Joaquin Gonzalez, State Governor of Quintana Roo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s expected to be an agile and simple transaction that won\u2019t complicate visitors\u2019 stay,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That makes sense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A state that\u2019s already on the <\/span><b>fast track to recovery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the pandemic isn\u2019t going to do anything to stall the process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flight demand is increasing all the time and they want to keep it that way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be honest, it\u2019s still way <\/span><b>easier to travel to Mexico<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than most other places.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t need a COVID-19 test to go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a health questionnaire to complete and you will have your temperature checked on arrival.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not too much of an inconvenience compared to other countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t forget that you do need either a negative nucleic acid amplification test or a negative rapid antigen test to travel back to the US.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The test needs to be done within three calendar days of departure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Everything-You-Need-to-Know-About-the-New-Visitor-Tax-covid-test.png\" alt=\"covid cancun tests\" width=\"760\" height=\"475\" data-id=\"24357\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is unless you have a positive viral test proving recovery from SARS-CoV-2 infection and a letter from a medical professional certifying you fit to travel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Not from the USA?
