If you are not really a morning person, <strong>set an alarm<\/strong> and lay off the tequila the night before (nothing worse than a hangover and an early get up).<\/p>\n<p>Trust me I&#8217;ve learned the hard way with this one before.<\/p>\n<p>Chichen Itza is an open space with little shade,\u00a0 the heat can be INTENSE.<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Come prepared<\/strong>! Transport<\/h2>\n<p>Now, I know what you&#8217;re thinking&#8230;&#8221;3 hours on a bus, how dull&#8221;!<\/p>\n<p>I was thinking the same.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong I was excited about the tour, but really no one likes to be sat down for that long.<\/p>\n<p>But <strong>the transport was a tour in itself<\/strong>;\u00a0 the coach driver and the attendant were hilarious.<\/p>\n<p>They were very articulate, speaking both Spanish and English for our group.<\/p>\n<p>Jose set the scene brilliantly for the day.<\/p>\n<p>Providing context on Chichen Itza and sharing fascinating information with us that I had never heard of before.<\/p>\n<p>Not only that, but they had artifacts with them that were passed around the bus for us to look at to deepen our understanding of this magnificent wonder of the world before we arrived.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20178\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/TZOLKIN-Calendar-Chichen-Itza-This-is-also-gold-in-knowledge-for-the-Mayans-created-a-calendar..png\" alt=\"Chichen Itza Transport Artifacts\" width=\"761\" height=\"920\" data-id=\"20178\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were around about 1.5 hours of the journey where we were left to hour own devices so I used this time to chat with the people next to me.<\/p>\n<p>But for 30 minutes of that time, <strong>we stopped off at a small authentic Mexican souvenir shop<\/strong>\u00a0just before reaching Chichen Itza.<\/p>\n<p>What many people don&#8217;t realize is that when traveling to Chichen from Cancun or Playa you actually cross over<strong> into a new state.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You move from Quintana Roo (where Cancun and Playa is) into the Yucatan.<\/p>\n<p>Witnessing a less touristic and more authentic way of Mexican life.<\/p>\n<p>The gift store you stop at gives you the chance to stretch your legs, buy any souvenirs that take your fancy, get a drink, and use the toilet.<\/p>\n<p>Once you arrive here you will know you don&#8217;t have long left on your journey to Chichen Itza.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Top tip for the journey:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Buy your souvenirs on the way there, it&#8217;s cheaper and more authentic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><b><a href=\"#top\">Back to top<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tour\">4. Tour Guide &amp; Mayan Ruins<\/h2>\n<p>When you arrive at the entrance to Chichen Itza you will see BIG queues.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;And you can glide on past them all smug knowing you don&#8217;t have to wait in that. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<h5>Our provider guarantees:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Immediate access to the grounds! No queues for you!<\/li>\n<li>Smaller groups for a more personalized experience.<\/li>\n<li>Groups are split up into Spanish speaking and English speaking groups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I think it all worked perfectly.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7403\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/chichen-itza-lores-18.jpg\" alt=\"Chichen Itza Tour Guide\" width=\"766\" height=\"574\" data-id=\"7403\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our tour guide &#8216;Jay&#8217; was a Chichen Itza EXPERT.<\/p>\n<p>Let me tell you, this guy knew his stuff.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t want to share too much about what he told us, all you need to know is that your tour guide will be able to answer any questions you may have.<\/p>\n<p>Jay was super friendly and knew all the best spots to observe the ruins, including a few shaded areas which were a welcome break from the heat.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Top tips:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"p1\">Listen to the instructions of your guide.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Make sure you understand the schedule, and adhere to it to avoid being left behind.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Take advantage of the guide&#8217;s knowledge.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"p1\">They can explain what you are seeing in terms of the hieroglyphics on the stones in the ball field, or how human sacrifices were performed. Don&#8217;t be afraid to ask questions.<\/p>\n<h5>Fascinating facts I learned:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">The Kukulkan pyramid was built according to the cycles of the planets, the moon, and that even the numbers of steps have significance.<\/li>\n<li>Games were played 4 times a year, the\u00a0<b>losing teams were beheaded<\/b>, and the winners carried their heads around the village for 3 days as a trophy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7396\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/chichen-itza-lores-7.jpg\" alt=\"chichen itza\" width=\"761\" height=\"570\" data-id=\"7396\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Mayan Ruins<\/h4>\n<p>Jay showed us around the grounds and among the most remarkable buildings, you see:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the Temple of Warriors<\/li>\n<li>the group of a Thousand Columns<\/li>\n<li>the platform of Venus<\/li>\n<li>the Ball Court<\/li>\n<li>the Snail<\/li>\n<li>the Observatory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After spending time with our tour guide we were free to roam the grounds for ourselves and <strong>take pictures for around 45 minutes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I used this time to walk down to the cenote on the grounds.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/chichen-itza-lores-5-2.jpg\" alt=\"Mayan pyramid Chichen Itza Kukulkan\" width=\"758\" height=\"569\" data-id=\"18326\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The name Chichen Itza means \u201cat the mouth of the well of Itza\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>One of the reasons this ancient city thrived so greatly for so long was largely due to the huge cenote &#8216;cenote Itza&#8217; that provided people with a fresh water supply.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s around a 10-minute walk from the main area so if you want to see the cenote just keep this in mind.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Top tips for viewing the ruins:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Stay hydrated.<\/li>\n<li>Take pictures when you are with your guide as you may not have time to go back around and visit them all again. The site is quite large.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><b><a href=\"#top\">Back to top<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"vendors\">5. Vendors<\/h2>\n<p>One thing I noticed right away while walking around Chichen Itza is that there A LOT of vendors.<\/p>\n<p>If you do see something you like,\u00a0haggle with the vendors, there are definitely deals to make.<\/p>\n<p>However, do be aware that a lot of the stuff they sell is often imported and not actually made in Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>My advice would be to buy your souvenirs at the store you stop at on the way there. Not only is it cheaper but the<strong> gifts are more authentic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However, most people wouldn&#8217;t think to do this as usually, you buy gifts after seeing the main event.<\/p>\n<p>The store outside of Chichen Itza will be closed on the way back,\u00a0 so take a good look on the way there and see if there&#8217;s anything you think would make a great gift or keepsake, and buy it then.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7411\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/chichen-itza-lores-29.jpg\" alt=\"Vendors at Chichen Itza\" width=\"760\" height=\"570\" data-id=\"7411\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Top tips for shopping:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Haggle haggle haggle!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><b><a href=\"#top\">Back to top<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"food\">6. The Food<\/h2>\n<p>This tour is a long day, that&#8217;s why I recommended that you<strong> bring snacks<\/strong> because I don&#8217;t know about you but walking and talking makes me hungry as hell.<\/p>\n<p>I like to refuel every now and then.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m definitely a grazer.<\/p>\n<p>Upon leaving Chichen Itza in the afternoon you will stop off for lunch at a nearby restaurant where you will be treated to delicious tacos, drinks, different meats, and fruits, all <strong>included in the price of the tour.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The quality of food surprised me. It was delicious and the service was excellent.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18842\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/chicken-tacos.jpg\" alt=\"Tacos\" width=\"759\" height=\"569\" data-id=\"18842\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Alcoholic drinks do cost extra<\/strong> so if you fancy a beer to cool off be sure to bring a little extra money for that.<\/p>\n<p>The restaurant is rather cute and homely with a Mexican feel to it. I loved it. The Cenote Visit<\/h2>\n<p>Just when you think the day can&#8217;t get any better, on the way back to Playa del Carmen we stopped for a swim in a beautiful cenote!<\/p>\n<p>Not just any cenote&#8230;<strong>Cenote Ikil!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This just happens to be one of the most photographed cenotes in the region, and for a good reason. It&#8217;s stunning!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an open cenote with picturesque vines and fauna.<\/p>\n<p>I will never forget this place and I am very eager to return.<\/p>\n<p>After a day of strolling around in the blazing sun, it was the perfect opportunity to cool off.<\/p>\n<p>From the changing rooms and lockers <strong>there is a LOT of stairs to go down<\/strong> to get to the cenote, so if your mobility isn&#8217;t great, it may just be better to admire from above.<\/p>\n<p>I was very keen to get down there as quickly as I could, but it is <strong>very slippery<\/strong> so just be careful and wear water shoes if you have them.<\/p>\n<p>It can be quite uncomfortable walking on stone stairs.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15425\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cenote_en_Chichn_Itz_Yucatan-mexico-1.jpg\" alt=\"Cenote Ikil\" width=\"759\" height=\"569\" data-id=\"15425\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;re down there, what are you waiting for?
