{"id":15696,"date":"2017-11-09T06:56:03","date_gmt":"2017-11-09T11:56:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/?p=15696"},"modified":"2017-11-09T07:08:11","modified_gmt":"2017-11-09T12:08:11","slug":"isla-mujeres-museum-of-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/isla-mujeres-museum-of-art\/","title":{"rendered":"Discover the Creepy Underwater World That Lurks Beneath the Waters of Isla Mujeres"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"content-section full-width with-col cover rella-no-padding rella-no-margin content-section-5a042441ef99a\">\n<div class=\"row vc_row-fluid\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a08 years ago, in 2009 a monumental underwater contemporary museum of art called <b>MUSA\u00a0<\/b>(Museo Subacu\u00e1tico de Arte) was formed.<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<div class=\"section-text text-block align-left\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p class=\"p1\">On land, Mexico is widely regarded as a country shrouded\u00a0in the magic and mystery of ancient <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maya_civilization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mayan<\/a> histories and traditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But the big blue ocean that surrounds this remarkable part of paradise houses many secrets of its own&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Prepare to be enchanted by a little-known spectacle awaiting to be discovered on the ocean bed floor.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-thumb_760x570 wp-image-15706\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/maxresdefault-1-1-760x570.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"760\" height=\"570\" data-id=\"15706\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There is an underwater world that lies beneath the crystal clear waters of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canc%C3%BAn\"><span class=\"s1\">Cancun<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/activities\/isla-contoy-isla-mujeres\"><span class=\"s1\">Isla Mujeres<\/span><\/a>, and Punta Nizuc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Inhabited by over 500 eerie structures it is a sight not to be missed!<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><b>What is the Underwater Museum of Art?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">Roberto D\u00edaz Abraham (former President of the Cancun Nautical Association) and\u00a0Jaime Gonz\u00e1lez Cano (Director of the National Marine Park) founded the project in an <b>attempt to save, protect, and promote the vibrant coral reefs<\/b> that surround <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quintana_Roo\"><span class=\"s1\">Quintana Roo.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Together they hired an English Sculptor <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jason_deCaires_Taylor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jason de Caires Taylor<\/a> to create the intricate and striking structures that would later be submerged in the water.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-thumb_760x570 wp-image-15698\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/hu-760x570.png\" alt=\"Museum of art\" width=\"760\" height=\"570\" data-id=\"15698\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Today, in MUSA there are now over<b> 500 permanent life-sized<\/b>\u00a0structures and it is one of the largest and most ambitious\u00a0underwater\u00a0attractions in the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Unlike conventional museums there are no walls, the only thing separating it from the rest of the world is the big blue ocean. Are you ready to dive in?<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-thumb_760x570 wp-image-15704\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/snorkeling-in-amazing-musa-760x530.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"760\" height=\"530\" data-id=\"15704\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><b>Why did they build the Underwater Museum of Art?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">This genius idea aims to demonstrate a conscious interaction between art and environmental science.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The structures, over time, will hopefully form part of a complex reef structure for marine life to colonize and inhabit.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-thumb_760x570 wp-image-15701\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/71d91759e68fde785f567b9b3887a999537d0409_2880x1620-760x570.jpg\" alt=\"Museum of art\" width=\"760\" height=\"570\" data-id=\"15701\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">All of the sculptures are fixed to the seabed and made out of specialized materials. The marine grade cement consists of a PH-neutral surface that promotes coral growth.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor allowed the plaster to dry before removing it and filling in the remainder of the sculptures.<\/p>\n<p>Since they were submerged the statues have become covered in algae and coral, they sure are a stunning sight to behold!<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-thumb_760x570 wp-image-15725\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playadelcarmen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/underwater-museum-13-1-760x570.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"760\" height=\"570\" data-id=\"15725\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you visit you may notice that some of the structures look like people you would meet in your everyday life.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor did this on purpose as a satirical commentary on humanity.
