From CANCUN, it’s a 4 1/2 hour drive south on Hwy 307 to Balamku. Take this main highway to the Mahahual turn off road. Along 307, you will probably want to stop at Tulum ( 2 hours south of Cancun) and visit their famous Mayan ruins overlooking the sea.
Another stopping place is Felipe Carrillo Puerto, right on 307, which has a few very good restaurants. Felipe Carrillo also has significant historical interest. It was a center during the last Mayan stand against the Spaniards, known as the War of the Castes, which lasted for the last half of the nineteenth century.
This rebellion was highly religious in nature, and Felipe Carrillo was the home of the sacred Talking Cross.
Watch for the topes ( better known as speed bumps) - there are many, especially as you approach Limones, another little town on 307. Limones has its own little Mayan ruin, and in behind the town is the archaeological zone of Chacchoben, one of a number of recently excavated Mayan sites in the area. Chacchoben is purported to have been one of the largest centers in all of the Yucatan. Just a couple of miles south of Limones, watch for the Mahahual and Xcalak sign where you’ll turn left.
Follow this new highway for about ½ hour to Mahahual. When you come into the village, go south along the beach road (the sea will be to your left) and follow this bumpy beach road for 5.7 kms. to Balamku.
