| Comments: I would recommend the hotel but would not return as it was not our choice. We were being ousted from our other accommodations and Aqualuna was chosen for us. It was by far the cleanest a nicest place we stayed throughout our entire trip, but its biggest downfall is the lack of a pool or swimming area. It is 2 blocks from the beach, but my husband and I both had to wave the garbage out of our path as we entered the water - it was absolutely disgusting. Its location was great otherwise. Its close to a Hot Bakery with fabulous breakfast at decent prices, and the 5th Ave market is only a block away. We found the major source of noise was vehicular from 10th Ave, and so we found we had to keep the windows closed. |

| Comments: Retiro Maya - what can I say...
We arrived to find out they? dbl booked us and we were the ones having to leave. It was our honeymoon and we booked back in October. This was the first strike. We were shown to our cabana, where we were guaranteed a king size bed, and well it was a standard. But our cabana had a nice view, and the beach was beautiful, so we decided to make the best of things. We tried to have our first dinner in the restaurant and the cook did not show for his shift. We then wandered down the beach to find another, without any recommendations, even when requested. Our first night we left our doors open for the breeze, and it was very nice. The second night our toilet was working, and we had unexpected visitors throughout the night - we found paw prints in the sand all around our bed. On the third night we let them open again and were woken up throughout the course of the entire night to critters - crabs and cats as we discovered - my husband is allergic to cats. On our forth night we left them open but barricaded the base of the door, yet somehow animals and critters still found there way in - we eventually closed all doors and windows. The last night of our stay we kept all doors and windows shut and suffered in the heat. For such a relaxing atmosphere we got very little sleep, screen doors would have been nice. We also got the impression the cabanas were individual cabanas, but it turns out there were motel like - all connected and very little privacy - including the toilet facilities.
The rest of the beach and restaurants were quite nice, but we found ourselves often the only ones around for dinner, and encountered very few walking along the beach in the evenings. There was no activity. It was not quite as we expected.
Finally on a side note, what people choose to do in their own home is their own business, but each night we found ourselves smelling marijuana around 11pm. We are certain it was the owner Luna. Again it’s her choice as it was her home, but with very little divide between us, she’d have been better to take a walk along the beach. We recommend the area, but not Retiro Maya. |
