Plusses: Loved the 'hacienda' feel of the place! Gorgeous walkways and settings. We had not one, but 2 little decks that let us look out from our room alone. Also it was a much larger room than the Paraiso Azul with a separated bath. Definitely a step up. Lovely courtyard; I'd like a house like this! They also had a breakfast buffet in house. We tried it and it was OK. Honestly there are a few better places within a half of a block, but a nice convenience.
Minuses: Noisy! Right on the main street, every car/conversation/party echoed through the central courtyard and everyone heard everything! The doors did a good job of sealing out a lot of the noise, but even so, the metal gate closing at night, the garbage trucks loading trash, the crews arriving in the AM... well, you get the idea. Also, they only offered a small bottle of water for the room. The pool was not heated, but since it was in the courtyard, it never got any sun. It was very cold - I don't think they wanted people to use it! Finally, the staff spoke essentially no English. Nice, but not overly helpful either.

The hotel is simple but very well located. In the heart of everything (bus terminal, ferry, shopping, dining). Staff is very courteous and helpful. Overall it met my expectations.

The sewer smell in our bathroom was terrible. We were able to control it somewhat by keeping our fan on & the window open. In our 2nd room, the TV did not work & was not fixed; and the safe was not useable & was not fixed. We were given a discount on our final bill.

This was our fourth visit to Hacienda del Caribe, and they are still a great location, with a great price/value ratio. They continue to be friendly and hospitable.
