Mexico is considered to have a tropical climate, which is categorized by hot, humid summers and cool and mild winters, but our “winter” can harldy be considered cool.
The coolest time of year in Playa del Carmen is from November until January. Luckily, during this time, we are still blessed with a daily average of 75°F (24 °C) and little rain. The evenings are a little cooler, which is a welcome change from our usually hot weather. During the rare cold fronts, temperatures may decrease to 64 °F (18 °C) at night and during these times it is not uncommon to see the locals with big coats and hats. The babies will be bundled into their stollers with blankets. If it does rain at this time of year, it is neither constant or overwhelming.
From February until April, it starts warming up. The daily temperature is a litle bit higher, about 82 °F (28 °C) and there is very little rain at this time of year. The seas are calm, the waters are warm, and it is a very popular time of year for tourists to vacation in Playa del Carmen.
From May until August, is our summer. Although the actual temperature is not much higher than the other times of the year, the humidity makes the “feels like” temperature any where from 95-105 °F (35-40°C). The humidity can be as high as 90% at times, and it is hot, hot hot! However, when seated at the swim up bar with a cold drink in your hand, the heat is a lot easier to handle!
From August until October is the peak season for hurricanes and tropical storms and is our rainy season. The combination of “rainy season” and “hurricane season” tends to scare the tourists away and this is the quietest time of year and considered our “low season” for tourism. It is not as bad as it seems. Although there is a chance of a hurricane and it is our rainy season, we still have on average 6 hours of sunshine daily! This can be one of the best times to get a deal on a vacation to Mexico.
