« Back Snorkelers can find paradise at Chankanaab National Park or La Ceiba and El Presidente hotels (where you can snorkel without staying there). Hikers and bikers might also like to go to the main Maya ruins, San Gervasio. The trails between the sites follow the ancient sacbeob (plural of sacb‚) and the shade of trees gives it a natural ambiance. As much fun to walk around as it is to see the ruins. The Cozumel Museum opened in 1987 in an airy building along the seafront, 21/2 blocks north of the main plaza. It presents local archeological history in four salas, exhibition halls, on two floors. The well-arranged museum is open 10 a.m. to 6 or 7 p.m. weekdays and 1 to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. No flash photograhy is permitted. There are several horseback riding ranches offering guided trips into the bush. Our favorite was the one at the very end of the north coast road along the western shore, after the last of the condos and hotels. Rides into the undeveloped jungle, and along the beach and lagoons are available; this stable is less expensive than those near the southern hotels. We skipped the caballero's offer of a visit to his ranch to see a caged lion and concentrated on looking for wildlife in the wild. |
